How Simcoe County Soil Affects Fence Installation
Ground conditions can change considerably across Simcoe County—and sometimes within the same neighbourhood.
Ontario maintains detailed soil data for Simcoe County because the region contains numerous soil types and drainage conditions. That variety is one reason a post-depth recommendation should be based on the actual property rather than a province-wide formula.
Sandy Ground
Wasaga Beach is well known for its sandy soil. The Town’s own historical information notes the area’s naturally sandy ground conditions.
Sand generally drains well, but loose sand may provide less sideways support around a fence footing. A wider footing or different installation approach may be needed to keep a tall fence stable.
The surrounding soil must also be properly compacted. Digging a deep hole and loosely filling the space around it does not create a reliable foundation.
Clay and Silty Soil
Clay-rich soil can hold water and expand when frozen. Drainage around the footing therefore becomes especially important.
Wet clay may also smear along the sides of an augered hole. The installer must evaluate the condition of the excavation rather than simply filling an unsuitable hole with concrete.
Rocky Ground and Glacial Till
Parts of the Collingwood area contain glacial deposits and underlying bedrock. Local geological reports describe combinations of lacustrine deposits, outwash sand, glacial till and bedrock.
Rocky conditions can make it difficult to reach the planned depth with lightweight equipment. A shallow hole should not be accepted simply because the digging became difficult.
Professional drilling equipment may be required to remove rocks, cut through dense material or reposition a post without compromising the fence layout.
Fill Soil
Soil around newer homes is not always undisturbed native ground. Backfilled trenches and disturbed soil can continue settling after construction.
A post installed partly within loose fill may move differently from one installed only a few feet away in undisturbed soil. That is why site conditions should be checked along the entire fence line.
Should Fence Posts Be Set in Concrete?
Concrete is commonly used to stabilize residential wood, chain-link and ornamental fence posts.
A properly formed concrete footing adds mass and helps resist sideways movement. However, concrete cannot compensate for every installation problem.
The footing still needs:
- Adequate depth
- Sufficient diameter
- Solid soil at its base
- Proper post alignment
- Appropriate drainage
- Correct curing time
- A top surface that does not collect water
A large lump of concrete close to the surface can still be pushed upward by frost. The location and shape of the footing matter as much as the amount of concrete used.

Why Gate and Corner Posts Need Extra Attention
Most early fence problems appear around gates, corners and changes in direction.
These posts carry forces that ordinary line posts do not.
A gate post supports weight on one side whenever the gate is open. A corner post may resist tension from two directions. An end post on a chain-link or wire fence must hold the tension placed across the entire run.
